An Easy Method for Learning the Notes of a Guitar

Learning how to play guitar is not as easy as just picking up the guitar and picking at the strings. If you are serious about learning to play guitar there are some core concepts that must be learned. One of the first and most important steps in learning to play guitar is learning guitar notes and their positions on your guitar. You will need to know and memorize each note and its position to play even the most basic tune. Each note on a guitar has a name that is represented by a letter of the alphabet. For this example we will use the twelfth fret on a guitar's fret board. Strings on a guitar's twelfth fret are labeled from the thickest guitar string to the thinnest guitar string in the following order:
E A D B G E
(The E note is the first note and also the sixth note)
Although there are only 6 notes, many beginners have a hard time remembering them and an even harder time remembering them in order. A simple method that is used by many guitar teachers when they are teaching guitar notes to their students is creating a catchy phrase where each note of the guitar is represented by a word in the phrase. The most popular of these phrases is "Every Adult Dog Growls Barks Eats". As you can see, the first letter of each word in the phrase is the letter associated with the guitar notes name it represents and its position in order.
Here is a list of some other popular phrases that many guitar players have used to memorize the order of each of the guitar's notes:
- Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie
- Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears
- Every Apple Does Go Bad Eventually
- Even Average Dogs Get Bones Eventually
If using a phrase helps you remember the notes of a guitar you can use any of the phrases above or get creative and come up with a phrase of your own. This phrase may be something you refer to even after years of experience.
Visual aides can also be very helpful when you first learn the notes of a guitar or bass. Remembering the positions of inlay markers and attaching fret stickers to the fret board of your guitar is another common method used by beginning and intermediate guitar players to help them visually remember the positions of guitar notes.
